In Memoriam – Dr B Marika AO

Yolngu woman, Dr B Marika, who died suddenly in July 2021 was awarded the Order of Australia in 2020. A recognised cultural leader, she was one of Australia’s outstanding artists.

Dr B Marika served on many cultural and arts boards, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and Bangarra Dance Theatre. She was a key advocate for visual artists’ rights: involved in a 1994 landmark case when the Federal Court awarded her (and seven other artists/estates) $185,000 damages against a company which ripped off their works (Carpet Case) and was one of the artists who campaigned to establish VISCOPY.
